5 Mistakes to Sidestep During a Salary Negotiation With a Candidate

5 Mistakes to Sidestep During a Salary Negotiation With a Candidate 5 Mistakes to Sidestep During a Salary Negotiation With a Candidate In case you're an employing chief, you might be intrigued to realize that more than six out of 10 administrators surveyed in a Robert Half study said they're willing to arrange beginning compensation. What's more, no uncertainty, the best up-and-comers know this. The better the up-and-comer, the almost certain you should be prepared for compensation arrangement when the opportunity arrives. Get a head start by investigating these five basic errors chiefs make when endeavoring to settle a negotiation: 1. Being ill-equipped A considerable lot of the present wise activity up-and-comers appear at the arranging table sorted out, having done their examination on the best way to get what they need. You ought to be readied, as well. Before you talk about pay, ensure you've benchmarked your contributions. Is the position harder to occupy than last time you employed? Use assets, for example, the latest Salary Guides from Robert Half as a source of perspective. 2. Consenting to a pay that is excessively high Very little can murder the soul of cooperation in your office very like starting a recently recruited employee at a higher rate than your present staff. While you may think compensations stay mystery, in the end they regularly get out, particularly in a private company setting. It's ideal to set a most extreme sum you're willing to extend to an employment opportunity competitor so there's a sensible level of inward value. In the event that the up-and-comer reveals his compensation, you won't need to stress over displeased associates. Employing? WE CAN HELP! 3. Believing it's everything about the cash Pay itself isn't the main piece of the compensation arrangement condition. In the event that an occupation competitor isn't happy with the beginning pay, help him to remember the intangibles identified with the position, for example, chances to learn and develop with the association and the advantages bundle. Still not moving? Here are some different advantages you may offer: Working from home Adaptable work hours Chances to go to workshops and gatherings Limited exercise center participation 4. Messing around Pay exchange is basically bartering: You're attempting to get what you need (an incredible representative) at the least conceivable expense. A to and fro is inborn all the while, however don't let it lead to messing around. Regard and be straightforward with the activity applicant and with yourself during pay exchange. Continuously remember your working environment needs and how simple or troublesome you think filling the position will be. In addition, don't let factors, for example, the corona impact - concentrating on one positive property of a competitor and overlooking everything else - pollute your judgment during the procedure. Once in a while you need to release an incredible applicant in the event that you can't strike a sensible arrangement. 5. Becoming involved with the occasion Try not to turn out to be so charmed in arranging that you overlook what's essential to your association. Now and again, you simply need to leave. On the off chance that your endeavors to charm a hesitant applicant miss the mark, the best activity much of the time is to cut your misfortunes and look elsewhere. The objective now ought to be to end the procedure so the competitor leaves with a sentiment of being dealt with reasonably and with poise. Work Experience the Art of Getting Connected University of Manchester Careers Blog

Work Experience the Art of Getting Connected You may have applied to job adverts for summer internships or work experience, but are you accessing all opportunities? Not every job is advertised by an employer so it is important to develop your skills in getting connected â€" making contacts with professionals in your area of interest so that: you can find out more about the sector/occupation show your enthusiasm for the industry make yourself known to people who could help you create opportunities for work experience make a good impression so you hear about future opportunities. Step 1: Who do you already know that can help? Everyone can find ways to create and develop a ‘network’ of contacts. You already have done this informally on your course, through University societies, family and friends. Start with what you know and make a list or if you prefer, a spider diagram of everyone you know.  Include work and volunteering colleagues, lecturers, careers staff. Friends of your parents. Anyone. Think laterally and be creative. Do any of them work in your area of interest? Do any of them know someone who works in your area of interest? This makes it important to let everyone know what you are looking for, what sector/occupation you want to find out about and get work experience in. That way if they do know someone, or have a chance encounter with someone who might be a good contact (it happens more often than you think), they could help you. Step 2: Making contact How well you know the contact may dictate how you approach them and ask them for advice. Whether you know your contact well through family, informally, or through another way as with previous college lecturers or work contacts,   approach them for information and advice â€" about the industry, how to gain work experience, how to find out about opportunities. Asking for information and advice first is usually better than asking for a job as it opens more doors. Remember, this is only step 2. If you are unsure how to develop your network, start with the people you know well first  your ‘warm’ contacts  to build your confidence. Always think of developing your network of contacts for the long term. It is not just for this summer’s internships. For contacts you know less well, contact them in writing first mentioning the person who recommended you speak to them. Ask for a few minutes of their time and outline what you were hoping they could help you with. If they are happy to do this, arrange a meeting/telephone call/skype chat to follow up. Prepare good questions, present yourself professionally and thank them for their time! Give them a copy of your CV too  (see our  Networking guide  for more info and advice). Step 3: Getting work experience If the meeting/call goes well and you have impressed them with your enthusiasm, toward the end ask about how you should go about getting experience in the sector/occupation. Does their organisation ever offer work experience, internships or placements? Who would you need to speak to about this and would they mind putting you in touch? What do you have available as University of Manchester students? Social media including LinkedIn Social media as you know can be helpful to develop contacts whether this be through Facebook, Twitter, email/ discussion forums but also LinkedIn, which can be a great networking tool for professionals: finding groups of interest to share discussion on industry interests, finding other professionals in your field to ‘link with’ searching for jobs in your sector. The more time you invest in developing your profile and networking through this route, the more fruitful it can be. See the advice on our website for how to use social media for career networking.   Visiting contacts organisations abroad and making contacts as a Global Graduate Global Graduates is an opportunity for 5 students to visit the cities of Dubai, Hong Kong, New York city and Singapore this summer between 19 -23rd August.   As part of the expectations of this role, each student will visit a range of organisations and contacts to learn more about their businesses and roles and city they visit.   Therefore a great opportunity to practice and develop your ability to network and make professional contacts. Check out the full details of what Global Graduates  will involve and how to apply for this position. Apply quick as the closing date is Friday 17th May! Making contacts with University of Manchester Alumni The University of Manchester Alumni Association can provide some useful events with alumni of the university and this can be a great opportunity to network and develop your professional contacts in an area of interest through different events. Events might take place in your School, or you can join Manchester alumni groups on LinkedIn. Making contact with an online mentor Professionals in many sectors/occupations offer their time as a mentor through the Careers Service. You can ask them career questions by logging into CareersLink  and searching on the Mentor tab. Useful workshops and events There are sometimes ‘networking’ events by Careers staff and employers throughout the year, login to CareersLink to register and find out more. For example, there is the following coming up in June: Get smart â€" Using Social Media for effective job hunting and networking You may also want to look at our information on Networking  in our Finding Work section, as well as also our Networking starting point guide. A people handshake says universes regarding them, and whether the handshake connected with people acknowledge it or not, the handshake is a main consideration in the manner every individual ponders the other. Before digging into some extraordinary handshake how to counsel, we should consider the errors which you will need to keep away from. Clumsy Handshakes Limp A limp handshake gives the impression of being weak. An excess of Shake A handshake with an excess of shake can seem to be irritating, unseemly, and social incompetent. The Finger Grabber-Have you at any point warmly greeted an individual where rather than appropriately interlocking their hands with yours they just tried fastening you around the fingers? I for one detest that one a lot. It's, well, strange. Dominator Handshakes At that point there sorts of individuals that exploit the handshake as a chance to set up their control. The Arm Wrestler The way that arm grappler hand shakers work is by attempting to get their hand on different people, either by broadening their hand with their palm confronting descending at first so the other individual will be 'stuck' as it so happens, or by finagling their hand on top after the underlying contact. The arm grappler handshake is youthful and doesn't move kinship, it essentially says that the culprit is attempting to play mind games with you. I will in general stay away from individuals like this the most. Tyrannical Although somebody who crushes only excessively hard may very well be making a decent attempt to do it right, they emit the impression of being oppressive and forceful. The correct method to do it Since we have built up a couple of the incorrect approaches to shake a hand, how about we look further into handshake best practices. Eye to eye connection shows certainty and sets up an individual association Fasten immovably shows certainty and builds up an individual association Talk during the handshake saying something as basic as I've been anticipating meeting you John Doe goes far during the clasp. It carries the physical handshake to another level in light of the fact that the discourse includes a verbal and enthusiastic component to the procedure. Utilize your left hand as well (discretionary) utilizing your left hand to contact the shoulder or twofold catch the handshake makes the experience an increasingly personal one. Only do this if the closeness will be valued. Time it right a decent shake takes about a second and a half or two. Letting go too soon can cause it to give the idea that you are not inspired by the other individual, or are nauseated by them-which can be annoying. Proceeding with the handshake the firm bit of the handshake grasp for a really long time can show up intrusive. Getting the planning perfectly additionally relies upon perusing the expressive gestures of the other individual to decode to what extent they would like to be hand-drawn in with you. start up culture in India Home career start up culture in Indiacareerstart up culture in IndiaBy Amit Kumar - October 27, 201501368Facebook There was a time when every youngster ambition for life was securing a good job and lead a smooth life. But, young generation’s perspective towards making right career choice has been changed with the changing time. Today’s youth wants to take risks, wants to fail, wants to retry, wants to explore because today’s youth wants to LEARN.This attitude towards learning has contributed largely to the growing craze of start up culture in India. The government on its part is also launching several new policies to aid the young entrepreneurs. People are resigning from their high paying jobs just for the sake of start up. They want to be their own bosses. They are coming forward with new and innovative ideas.Start up culture is for those who want to work unconventional. If you are a 9 to 5 sort of guy, start up is not your cup of tea. You better stick with your conventional j ob.Unconventional is not the only word for start ups, it also contains a high risk factor. You may rock the world with your fresh innovation or you may end up losing all of the investments you put in your start up. Even if you are working for a start up company being run by someone other than you, the risk factor doesn’t lose its impact on you. When you work for a start up company you should always be ready to face the ‘hired this moment fired that moment’ situation. Start ups involve risk of failing anytime and their revenues can fall of at the drop of hat. So be prepared before entering into the world of start up.One certain thing about start ups is that you get to learn a lot from it. You never stop learning here. On the other hand, working in a conventional office does not offer much scope for learning. You need to use the skills you already possess at your regular job.Pay is another point that counts. Most start up employers do not offer very handsome pay. If you have res ponsibilities to take care of or any sort of debt that you have to pay immediately then a more stable job should be your option.Besides all of the above things, there is one more major aspect associated with it. That aspect is brand name. Now think about people’s reaction towards hearing an IBM employee versus a Start up guy.If you have already slept over considering these issues and still determined to give it a try then you surely belong to start up culture. Surviving The Networking Frenzy How To Stay Connected and Sane (Part 1) Victoria Reitano is a speaker, multimedia journalist and social media addict who currently covers technology news for a trade magazine and freelances on the side. Ive had multiple people tell me, throughout my life but more so lately, that they just dont know how I do it. How I am able to stay organized, look fashionable and manage multiple projects at once. At the risk of sounding obnoxious, my answer is generally along the lines of I just do it?, but since many dont buy the corrupted Nike slogan, Ive decided to dedicate todays post to telling you what tools I use to stay on top of my game. Staying connected in todays society IS a job in and of itself, but its important to not let it weigh you down. Tools to Stay Connected Network Twitter The Twitter application for Mac and iPhone is, by far, the best out there. The ONLY downside to this application is that you cannot schedule tweets. It allows you to search for people or hashtags, favorite tweets (which is generally a way to save them for later) and it also allows you to follow, RT, quote and mention other tweets. Its a full service application that is lightweight enough to run on your desktop in the background. I keep it open all day long and use the taskbar icon to notify me of new tweets and/or mentions. On my iPhone, I have the notifications set so that any time someone mentions me, I get a push-notification with the actual Tweet on my iPhone screen. Google Apps I know, I know it seems strange to head over to Google after expounding upon my love for all things Apple, but its true, Google has great apps. Lets start with Gmail. Gmail: I love of clean inboxes which is nearly impossible to do without Gmails folder system. The folders sync with Gmail on my iPhone and allow me to keep all emails dedicated to a specific project in one place. You can even search the folder groups individually for specific emails, which comes in handy when you need to keep digital records. Calendar: I use Google Calendar as a Web App and then sync all my calendars, from Yoga to Work, to my iPhone Documents: Collaboration projects are a breeze with Google docs. I even have a to-do list on there that I can access at home or at work. It allows me to jot down ideas throughout the day, because you never really know when genius will strike (or when Ill remember that I need milk). Im not a big fan of the To Do Apps that seem to be flooding the App Store, but I do like to have a working list. I am also a huge fan of Post-It notes, which are all over my desk, car and office desk. Hootsuite Having run several Twitter chats for @UniversityChic, I quickly learned that you needed a way to schedule questions, update the hashtag feed quickly and respond to people who responded to you. Hootsuite, a Web app and also a mobile application, allows you to do all that. You can even shorten links and schedule tweets days, weeks and months in advance. Its a great tool for anyone managing multiple Twitter and Facebook accounts as well. Instagram This photo app is a great way to enhance, edit and upload iPhone photos. The best thing about this app including the cool new capabilities and filters in 2.0 is that it lets you upload to several different networks, chief among them being Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. I found it was a great way to stay connected to my Tumblr without actually posting on my Tumblr. Instagram is a great way to share what youre doing on a real-time basis without sitting for ten minutes or more uploading images to all your different apps. Foursquare I use this app to win badges, because who doesnt like #winning?? Of course, I also use it to learn about new things in my town. The explore tab is a great way to do this and its kind of fun to see where your friends are, or at least I think its fun, with friends scattered all over. Paper.li Your Twitter feed is filled with people you deem relevant. So, your followers probably want to know why. Share a paper  with them via Paper.li. It takes all of the tweets on your timeline and turns them into a digital paper of sorts. It can be delivered to users inboxes as well, which is how some prefer to receive their news these days. MailChimp Who wouldnt love a chimp dressed up like a postman? I mean, how frickin cute is that!?!? He reminds me of the Paul Frank jammies I got every Xmas. Anyway, this service lets you create newsletters from templates, add social tools, send it out for Free (there are pricing plans, but most lightweight users can get away with the free plan to start) and create different landing pages for different lists. Stay tuned for Part 2 where Victoria will share how you can use these applications to stay organized and sane!

10 Tips for Avoiding Office Politics

10 Tips for Avoiding Office Politics Every workplace has the shroud of office politics. There will inevitably one or two people who love to jockey for position, love to spread rumors, and want to get ahead by spreading their version of the truth. Office politics have been the cause of stress, firing, and transfers since the idea of offices were first instituted. How to Avoid Office Politics Avoid office gossip: When you first join a workplace, you start with a clean slate. You know your immediate boss and the people with whom you work, but little else. This quickly changes when the local office gossip starts talking. They will spread their personal opinions and cloud your initial impressions. Stay away from the office gossip. Stay focused: The best way to avoid office politics is to stay focused on your work. You were hired to do a job, and that job should not be interrupted to listen to stories about dating and relationships. When the rumors start flying, take the opportunity to design more streamlined processes for the company. Invent new product lines. Devote yourself to your work. Reveal little personal information: Talk to your coworkers, but keep it within the realm of small talk. Talk about the weather, but not about your church. Talk about how many cases of paper that you will need, but avoid conversations about the latest voting cycle. You give the rumor mill ammunition when you talk about your personal life. Listen to people: Listen to everyone within your company. Do not engage them in conversation, but allow them to speak with you. If people want to talk to you, listen with an open mind, but do not offer your opinions on the situation. Be seen as the neutral party who will listen to everyone. Make your agenda visible: Make your agenda known to your coworkers. You are a team player. You do not want to play political games, because that dilutes the message that your company wishes to send to its customers. You should reveal that you are strictly working for the paycheck, nothing more. Be who you are: If you are yourself all the time, there are no worries about how you should act. Do not act like a servant to some coworkers and a master to others. Be aware of your position within the companys hierarchy, but do not let that affect your words. In order to avoid the political quagmire, make everyone realize that you are exactly the person that you present. Questions should be private: If there is something which is truly bothering you about your company, raise questions to your boss in private. Do not bring those questions up with coworkers or other individuals. State your opinions of a situation in a calm, professional manner. Do not use the common areas as a forum to air your personal conflicts with the companys decisions. Say only good things: It is hard to resist engaging yourself in office politics. When you are asked your opinions about a coworker, talk about their strengths. Engage the egos of the other members of your team by spreading only compliments about your coworkers. If you have not interacted with someone, tell the truth. Walk away: If someone starts gossiping about people within your office, take every opportunity to walk away from that person. Change the subject or say something good about the person. Stay positive: Keep a great attitude about your office. That smile is contagious. Every office needs a little spot of joy. Keep only positive individuals around you. Everyone has problems and sorrows in their life, but work is not the place to talk about your personal drama. Avoid the politics of your office, as it can only lead to trouble. Take the time to cultivate your position of being the neutral party. You want to be a resource for information. When you walk away from political maneuvering, you are a better person.

The Right Way To Prepare A Resume

The Right Way To Prepare A ResumeWhen you start a career, there is often a lot of salad dressing that needs to be put on your resume for an interview. Salad dressing should not be a substitute for actual work experience and it should never be the very first thing you put on your resume. The purpose of a resume is to get you a good job that is secure and well paying, not to show that you have put together a wonderful presentation with substantial work history. And remember that resume writing should be done for yourself. It should not be presented for the prospective employer. After all, your resume should not be an endorsement of you as a professional or a future employee. Therefore, there should be some meatier portions of your resume that describes you as a worker. Do not take shortcuts when you are writing your resume. Don't just cut out your meat and put it in the 'salad' section. On the other hand, I don't have any beef left in my resume after working my six years at the same job. But you can always use this as a motivation when you are trying to write your own resume.I think that the best salad prep tips are actually applicable to all resumes but particularly those that deal with work experience. While it may seem like the case for you, if you want to make sure you get a job, you will need to work hard to get a good resume and also a job.You can take advantage of the structure that has been developed in your area of specialty and you can follow the guidelines put forth by the most successful writers who are working on the business of resume writing. In this case, if you are writing resumes for technical positions, the following tips apply.omitting VitalInformation - omitting vital information is a common mistake that is made when preparing a resume. Ignoring critical information will inevitably land you in the 'salad' section of the resume. In addition, don't forget that you have the right to request that the writer remove any information that you consider i rrelevant to your position.oOverusing pictures of you - While you have to be careful with pictures, do not use them as your sole representation of yourself. You should always provide a picture of yourself that shows you as a human being and not just a veneer that has been carefully applied over the top of a photograph.

Defining Your Career Purpose in Your Résumé - Pathfinder Careers

Defining Your Career Purpose in Your Résumé - Pathfinder Careers Defining Your Career Purpose in Your Résumé Right now, there are two clients that I am working with that are having difficulties  in establishing their career direction.   Inevitably, at some point during this process, when their lack of clarity starts to become an obstacle, I get the exasperated question: Cant you just write a general résumé  for me? The answer is: I could, but I wont be helping that  person at all.   It would be a wasted financial investment. These days, you simply cant have a one-size fits all résumé  document.  Last week I wrote in this blog that there is no easy button in  putting together  career credentials.  It takes time, attention, and critical thinking about this career tool. You also  have to be laser-precise, simply because so many employers are now using applicant tracking software to screen out unqualified or unrelevant candidates.   Having this focus is absolutely  necessary to gathering the correct cloud of keywords in the career document. But what happens when you arent quite sure what you want to do?   Do you still try to forge ahead with the résumé and hope for the best? Or avail yourself upon some other resources? I always tell my clients that while I personally am not a career coach, I  AM the person who puts their career direction down on paper.   I can distill it and refine it, but they have to have a good sense of their direction and purpose before they should consider hiring me.  I have a lot of great work-arounds in my bag of résumé tricks, but I cant find mind-reader or psychic in there! Getting back to the folks  suffering clarity in their career purpose, I always suggest several options to help them get that sense of purpose for the résumé. 1) Do some on-line research on jobs that interest you.   Look at the skills required in those jobs, and do a cross-analysis of  the expertise, abilities and strengths that you already possess. Sometimes, the answer  lies in that  gold pan, glittering in the sand. 2) Try using  some of the free online personality and interest assessment tools available.   You want to make sure that these are legitimate, so do your research first before  giving any personal or confidential information out. 3) There are paid services out  there that can provide similar  evaluations of your interest levels and strengths,  which can provide some good feedback on the types of jobs for which you might be best suited. 4) The old stand-by: What Color Is My Parachute? this book has been around for decades, but has stood the test of time, providing readers with a self-paced interactive and activity-filled workbook to discover vocational interests and passions. 5) Hire a career coach.   There are professionals out there who specialize in working with job seekers needing one-on-one counseling and support while they engage in career exploration.   Make sure that the person you want to hire is a professional, and has credentials including membership in professional coaching associations. 6) Test drive your dream job.   As an example, VocationVacations is a company that allows people to experience a new career field first-hand by  working next to an industry expert who can show the job seeker the ropes.   This experience doesnt come cheap, but the information, experience, and insight gained is invaluable.   Sure beats quitting a job for a dream job, only to find out that the dream job wasnt what you thought it was! My point  about this clarity of purpose is to take the time to discern a clear career direction before sitting down to write a résumé, or before hiring someone to write it for you.   This will help you collect the right keywords, define the appropriate and relevant experience, and position yourself towards that specific job type effectively.       Until you have that clear definition, you shouldnt be trying to write this document.   Your lack of purpose will be readily apparent to the reader of your résumé, and will have a direct impact on your viability as a candidate!

Grown Up Gigs Val Geisler, Client Experience Systems Strategist - When I Grow Up

Grown Up Gigs Val Geisler, Client Experience Systems Strategist - When I Grow Up Yay! Val Geisler is my guest for Episode 20 of Grown Up Gigs! Michelle Ward Creative Career Coach whenigrowupcoach.com Val Geisler Client Experience Systems Strategist valgeisler.com I love Grown Up Gigs because no matter how similar someones backstory is to someone elses or how identical their titles are the experiences, lessons, and paths are always different. Like me, Val Geisler was a theater nerd who got her BFA, transitioned out of that career and into an unfulfilling sales job, and then became a business owner. But while my theater career was on stage, hers was off. While I purposefully quit my job to be a full-time entrepreneur, she got fired and had to turn her 6-month side hustle into her career. While I became a creative career coach, she launched a VA biz that transitioned into Client Experience Systems Strategist consulting. There were so many things she said that resonated with me, and that I wanna help her shout from the rooftops. Things like: You can create what you want to become by being an entrepreneur. Nothing is permanent just try it on. Everything leads you to where you are headed. The other side of fear is that someone has done it before. The things I spend the least amount of brain time on are the most successful things. You have to balance the amount of time you spend spinning your wheels vs. the time youre actually productive about things. Do You Have a Goal For Your Resume?

Do You Have a Goal For Your Resume? Before you can start the evaluation of your resume you need to be able to formulate a few statements that go along with your goal statements. Statements are necessary in an evaluation so you don't end up being rejected and then not know what you're going to do next. You need to make sure that you have some goals that you are willing to work towards, and they should be clearly stated in your resume. It is important to not just state your goal statement but rather use it as the backbone of your entire resume. Your goal statement should tie in to your other statements. Use it to inform, to emphasize your strengths and your qualifications and to define why you are the best candidate for the job. The goal statement should focus on you and not just on your qualifications or your work history.Your statement should tell a story about you. It should tell you why you are the best candidate for the job and why you should be hired. The information you present in the goal statement should be compelling enough to convince a hiring manager that you are the best person for the job. It should also make you sound like the type of person that is truly passionate about the position and wants to be there for a long time.If you did not do this before and you are looking for a potential employer, a job description is often your best bet. This way you have more information to work with, so you can present yourself in a way that really shows why you are the right person for the job. A job description can also show your interest in the job and this makes you stand out from all the other candidates. You can also include your reason for the job in the statement, if that is something you are anxious to say because you would love to work for this company. The point of your statement should be to illustrate what you bring to the table that makes you the best candidate for the job. This is where the power of statement power comes into play. The power of your s tatement is that you can link your resume to the goal statement and vice versa. That way you have something to compare your resume to and it helps to connect both statements. The main purpose of your goal statements is to identify what you want to achieve in your career. You need to outline what you have accomplished already, where you are now and where you plan to go. Your goal statements should always be short and to the point, you never want to bore the reader with a long paragraph of information. You will need to use goal statements in your resume as well. The only problem is that you need to be clear and concise, it should give your reader all the information they need in order to know what your goal is. Just make sure you always tie the goal statements into your statements so that they reinforce each other.

Josh Levs The Invisible Workload That Drags Men Down

Josh Levs The Invisible Workload That Drags Men Down Many of the men you know are suffering from anxiety. More than six million in the United States alone have depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Stress levels are on the rise, too. On a 10-point stress scale, the average man scores a 5, essentially closing a previous gap with women, the American Psychological Association found. Men die by suicide 3.5 times as often as womenâ€"more than 90 men a day. And the problem is global. But few people realize the mental health struggles of men, because men are less likely than women to let on how stressed or anxious they’re feeling. And they’re less likely to seek help. That’s why it was disappointing to see an article on Money.com last week which stated that men don’t worry enough. Headlined “The Invisible Workload That Drags Women Down,” the column by Lisa Wade, a professor of sociology at Occidental College, argues that women are disproportionately burdened with the “mental work” of family life. The piece opens with the story of a woman who said she spends far more time than her husband worrying and noticing things the household needs. “If that work were shared, women’s extra burdens would be lifted,” Wade wrote. “Only then will women have as much lightness of mind as men.” The column was not designed to bash men. And it did note that men and women spend equal amounts of time doing a combination of paid and unpaid work. There’s no doubt it resonated with many readers. Close Modal DialogThis is a modal window. This modal can be closed by pressing the Escape key or activating the close button. Still, it was misguided to suggest that men have lightness of mind. Men have an invisible workload too, and it is weighing on them. Mad Men-era work structuresâ€"both policies and stigmasâ€"are taking a toll on all of us. The same obstacles making it tougher for women to advance in the workplace also make it tougher for men to have as much time with their families as they want and need. It’s a reality I know well, since my own legal battle against CNN/Time Warner for fair parental leave attracted global attention. For my book All In, I tracked how the stresses of work and family are affecting fathersâ€"the most misunderstood part of the modern family. One study I cited from the Families and Work Institute found that men suffer from work-life conflict even more than women do. I did more than 150 hours of interviews with fathers from different walks of life. I asked them how “stretched out” they feel on a scale of 1 to 10. Virtually all said 10; two said eight. In many cases, the concerns are financial. Dads are still the vast majority of primary or sole breadwinners, shouldering hefty financial burdens. I also shared my own story of having lost sleep worrying about taking care of my family. After the book came out, men all over the world started sharing their experiences with me. Why don’t they ask for help? “In our society, as men, we learn to see this as a weakness,” says Dr. Shervin Assari of the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. “Hegemonic masculinity is a barrier to seek care and talk about emotions.” His research, published in May, found that men are more likely to have their stress lead to depression in the long term. Wade cites one tiny, outdated study from 1996 that included 23 couples. But today, dads are doing more than ever. Men are 43% of primary shoppers for their families. And there’s no evidence to suggest they need their wives to tell them what to buy. In fact, men often choose different products and brands, a study found. Men may think less about certain household needs, but more about others. The APA found, for example, that slightly more men than women are stressed about work and money. And while only 33% of women are successful in their efforts to get enough sleep, only 25% of men are. It’s quite possible that women spend more time worrying in general. Researchers cite both cultural and biological reasons. But the suggestion that there’s a finite amount of “mental work” to be done, and that men aren’t doing their fair share, is mistaken. Today’s mothers and fathers are stressed. Stress doesn’t discriminate. The solution isn’t for men to worry more. It’s for couples to discuss their worries and support each other. Also, backward perceptions of the roles of men and women at home are a major factor holding back women’s advancement in the workplace. Many executives believe the false stereotype that moms run the home and dads are lazy. These executives oppose paternity leave and flexible schedules for men, thinking that any guy will just kick up his feet and wait for his wife to get home to do all the real work. Men who take paternity leave or seek flexible schedules are often fired or demoted for the same reason. This pressure keeps dads at work more, which leaves families with no choice but for the moms to stay home. It’s a vicious, sexist cycle. All women who notice and keep track of their families’ many needs deserve big props and respect for it. So do the men who do this work. It’s crucial, detail-oriented, and never-ending. It makes a home a home. For 2017, let’s resolve to put aside misguided gender assumptions and work together to achieve a better balance and healthy work-life integrationâ€"for the sake of women and men.
